The Book

Faith that keeps pace with your shift

Nursing asks for everything — your hands, your attention, your heart. This devotional meets you there. Each entry is short enough for a break room and deep enough to carry into the next room, pairing Scripture with the real weight of bedside and leadership work.

Written by a nurse leader who has walked the units, led the teams, and prayed through the hard days, With Him, For Real in Scrubs is an invitation to practice your faith out loud in the place you already serve.

The Author

Marsha Sesay

Portrait of author Marsha Sesay smiling

“Leadership has never been about a title for me. It has always been about people.”

I am a nurse leader, author, educator, mentor, and woman of faith who is passionate about helping others grow and succeed. Throughout my career, I have been blessed with opportunities to lead teams, develop healthcare professionals, advance nursing practice, and create pathways for others to reach goals they once thought were out of reach.

My work is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves someone who sees their potential and helps them pursue it. Whether I am leading healthcare initiatives, writing about leadership and innovation, mentoring students, or speaking to professional groups, my focus remains the same: building people, strengthening communities, and creating meaningful impact.

Professionally, I serve as the Administrative Director of Professional Practice and Clinical Education and Magnet Program Director for Ambulatory Nursing at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Personally, I am a lifelong learner, an advocate for leadership development, and someone who believes faith, compassion, and service should guide every decision we make.

I strive to lead with authenticity, encourage with purpose, and serve with humility. My prayer is that through my work, writing, and leadership, I can help others recognize their value, embrace their calling, and become the leaders they were created to be.

Inside the Book

A look at the pages

There’s something sacred about knowing you were called to this work. Nursing isn’t just what you do…. It’s part of who you are. You’ve probably heard people say, “nursing is a calling,” but what does that even mean? It means your heart shows up even when your body is tired. It means your spirit leans in when you feel like turning away. It means you care even when it costs you.

Nursing has evolved over the years—more autonomy, advanced degrees, and impressive innovations—but at its core, it's still a calling. A holy one. Not because it happens in a church, but because God’s purpose runs through it. Even on days when you question everything… The call is still holy.

The Nursing We Shape

The Nursing We Shape is a podcast about nursing, leadership, and the future of the profession we all have a hand in creating.

Hosted by nurse leader, educator, and author Marsha M. Sesay, the podcast creates space for honest, thoughtful conversations about the things nurses are navigating every day, leadership, professionalism, workplace culture, career growth, education, and change.

The Nursing We Shape is not about pretending the hard parts of nursing do not exist. It is about talking about them in a way that moves us forward.

Through conversations with nurses, leaders, educators, and others connected to the profession, The Nursing We Shape explores what we can learn, what we can challenge, and what we can do differently.

Because nursing is always evolving—and each of us has a role in shaping what comes next.
